Dhinakaran (“Dhina”) Chinappen is a Research Associate Faculty member in Neurology at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed postdoctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School and earned his PhD in Computational Neuroscience at Boston University. He previously received a Master of Engineering from Cornell University and undergraduate degrees in Bioengineering and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania.
His research examines electrophysiological markers of epilepsy using human intracranial and non-invasive scalp recordings. His research has involved examining electrophysiological features of epileptiform discharges and sleep-related oscillations in epilepsy. He also contributes to collaborative studies investigating sensory gating, and closed-loop auditory stimulation during sleep.
Before pursuing doctoral training, Dr. Chinappen worked in biomedical engineering in industry, where he contributed to the development of FDA-cleared EEG and MRI clinical decision-support systems. His research interests focus on quantitative approaches to electrophysiological biomarkers and their relationship to cognition in epilepsy.
